Company background & history 

Hirundo Lesotho (Pty) Ltd is the Lesotho based engineering company in the Hirundo group of companies developing and realizing wind farms in Lesotho. Hirundo Lesotho aims to develop and realize wind farms in Lesotho in best possible cooperation with all stakeholders to contribute to local, clean and affordable energy for Basotho. In synergy with the civil works for the windfarms in Lesotho, the aim is to build structures along the windfarm access roads to introduce or improve (wet)land and livestock management and water harvesting practices.

Hirundo Energy bv is a Belgium based engineering company, developing wind farms in Lesotho and Ghana. The company was established in 2016 as spin-out of the group of companies that started developing wind energy projects in the North of Belgium in 2000. The team has built and currently operates 14 wind turbines in Belgium and supplies 65GWh of clean electricity every year to the cooperative Wase Wind. Wase Wind supplies the clean electricity to its customers in the region at competitive rates. Being at service to the community by supplying clean and affordable electricity in good relationship with all stakeholders is the core of our aspirations and activities.

Group of companies 

The entities in the group of companies that develop, finance, operate and maintain the wind farms and sell the electricity in Belgium are Fortech Studie, Fortech and Wase Wind. 

  • Fortech Studie is accountable for the project development and engineering of wind energy projects across Belgium. The team at Fortech Studie possesses an extensive array of competencies and expertise in various areas, including grid connection and integration of renewable energy, stakeholder consultation and engagement, environmental legislation, and environmental impact analysis. Fortech Studie has completed project development and obtained all necessary permits for every wind farm currently under the operation of Fortech, demonstrating its successful track record. 

  • Fortech is the owner and operator of 14 wind turbines situated in the northern region of Belgium. These turbines have an annual output of 65 GWh, which is enough to fulfil the electricity needs of approximately 18,000 households in the country. Through their experience in constructing, commissioning, and maintaining wind farms, Fortech has gained extensive expertise in this field. 

  • Wase Wind is a cooperative company that secures funding from around 2,800 individuals and local businesses located in the region where its wind turbines are installed. These individuals actively participate in the company and have the opportunity to purchase the electricity produced by the 14 wind turbines at a fair price.
